Hi,

My employer advertises all new jobs internally and externally. On all internal job advertisements they always state applicants need to have a high performance rating in their last performance review.

This rule has never been enforced since I joined a year ago. However for a role I wish to apply for they have decided to follow the rules. The same role was advertised 6 months ago and applicants of all performance ratings were able to apply.

I have asked my manager for an explanation but they have evaded giving a detailed answer which leads me to suspect there is something wrong.

This job I want is the only one currently advertised where they are enforcing the rule.

Can an employer act in this way?

Would it be worth taking to our HR Dept?

I don't want to cause trouble but I genuinely feel my employer are not acting fairly.

Yes I would suggest you talk to HR. Perhaps if you press your case they will be impressed by your enthusiasm.

I am very tempted however I am likely to leave it.

The recruitment manager responded advising that there has never and will never be an applicant accepted without having a high performance rating.

There are other jobs advertised where they are not enforcing this rule. I think if I push my issue other people will be unable to apply for these jobs and future jobs.

I don't think this would be fair.
